Our favourite summer reviews!

When we think of summer, we think of long nights, being outdoors, festivals and adventure! There have been so many exciting disabled access reviews this year, and already we’ve got a long list of new places we want to visit. Here’s a round-up of some of our favourite summer reviews, with lots of fun on the water, keeping fit and a few friendly alpacas!

Mylor Sailing School, Falmouth

“At last we found a fully accessible activity which is very well run by friendly and knowledgeable staff who give disabled people the opportunity to get out on the water, such a big part of life in Cornwall, but so often difficult to achieve. My son who is 25 felt a sense of achievement doing the sailing and loved the thrill of the wheelyboat.”

The Alpaca Trekking Centre, Thornhill

“The alpaca trek is completely wheelchair accessible and all on the flat. There are no steps at all. I found the alpaca trek very enjoyable and easy to do in my power wheelchair. There were two cattle grids to cross during the trek, but these were easy to cross and the owner stood behind me in case I needed a push, but it wasn’t required. The owner is very warm and full of fun. He made us feel completely welcome and at ease. He was incredibly informative and it was great to hear his stories and interesting facts.”

Coulée Verte René-Dumont, Paris

“The former railway line to Vincennes was transformed in the 1990s into a linear garden and walkway which stretches for 4.7km from a start near the Place de la Bastille in the heart of the city to the Square Charles Péguy. Much of the trail is elevated and offers fine views of this part of Paris, and most of the route is wheelchair accessible. The sections that have been turned into a linear garden are beautifully planted. There are two lifts to enable wheelchair users to access different sections of the trail.”

Lochaber Leisure Centre, Fort William

“This is the most accessible swimming pool I've ever visited catering for all abilities. There were three ways to access the pool. I used the shower chair and pool hoist. There was also a track hoist with a sling going directly into the pool from the changing room. There was a wide pool stairway with grabrails for those who find walking difficult.”

Mona, Museum of Old and New Art, Berriedale

“This venue makes traveling to the island of Tasmania just south of Australia worthwhile. Make it memorable and sail the scenic route by catameran from Hobart harbour. A pier is available on the gallery side for anyone with restricted walking ability, to avoid the 80 steps cut into the cliff face.”

The Loch Katrine Experience, Stirling

“We found the signposts to be excellent in getting us to the pier and found a disabled parking bay right beside the booking office/jetty. Boarding was made easy for the wheelchair thanks to a ramp and the crew members willing to assist. Due to the weather I stayed inside and, although the cabin was busy I was able to have good forward and side facing views.”

Rhyl Beach, Rhyl

“If you go to the Liquid Force Kite cafe on Rhyl front the owner will be able to help, he will ring the life guards to get the key and there are accessible beach wheelchairs in the red and brick lock up shed. They are excellent so easy to use on the beach and go in the sea. There is a purpose built ramp to use on them down to the beach.”

Headingley Cricket Ground, Leeds

“The ground facilities are good. The ground is big so familiarise yourself with the layout. There are different places to view the match from and the modern toilets are accessible and good (under the stands). All the staff working are exceptional. The service is exemplary - above and beyond. If you need anything - just ask.”

Fringe Box Office and Shop, Edinburgh

“A fantastic experience from start to finish. Top class service. The actual ticket office is downstairs but if you go in the main shop, they will contact a member of staff who can deal with accessible tickets. Whilst we were waiting the staff even asked my mother if she wanted or needed a seat while waiting.”
