Overview
This venue makes traveling to the island of Tasmania just south of Australia worthwhile. Make it memorable and sale the scenic route by catameran from Hobart harbour. A pier is available on the gallery side for anyone with restricted walking ability, to avoid the 80 steps cut into the cliff face. Great views on arrival and from museum cafe. The gallery space is actually all underground. Descend in a lift or via a spiral staircase to the basement level and begin a journey through Art works displayed on 2 further levels via a series of ramps and bridges. The monumental entrance in the basement is impressive and I wasn't disappointed by the variety of Australian contemporary art displayed and the 'Museum of Everything' ( works created on the fringe of the established Art world ). With so much to see take a break in first floor cafe. Enjoy tasty dishes helpfully displayed on plates with prices for quick decisions. Also on offer local wines and beers. Eat outside in the terrace garden if weather permits. July is winter here but the sun shone and I sat outside. Outside a short walk takes you to the Moorilla wine tasting experience and a further 2 restaurants which I do want to go back to try.
Transport & Parking
Some parking available, but boat accessible.
Access
Several people not in my group were making their way around the gallery and negotiating the boat with sticks and in wheelchairs. Photo of toilet attached.
Toilets
On top floor at entrance. Plenty of space, shared with baby changing facilities.
Staff
Friendly smiling faces, quick and professional in the cafe.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
It's a long journey but if your in Australia make the trip over, you won't be dissaponted, the building and fabulous views are worth it alone.
