February Review Roundup

Welcome to the February 2024 review roundup. We have some really fantastic reviews to share with you this month. We couldn't share up-to-date, disabled access information without the help of our wonderful volunteer reviewers. It's been fantastic this month to welcome so many new reviewers. No matter whether you are new to Euan’s Guide or have used our website before, we would like to say  a huge warm welcome and thank you for being here.

Places to visit

Beingsicksucks sent us a fantastic review of her experience at Bristol Airport, where she went for an orientation visit with her assistance dog, Ocho. “We met staff all throughout the airport, and everyone greeted us with a smile and helped answer any questions or concerns we had. Everyone was brilliant and really well trained in helping people with disabilities.”  This review shows how valuable disability awareness training can make a big difference to the visitor experience - we know from our recent Access Survey results that 67% of disabled people are more likely to visit somewhere new if they feel welcomed by the staff or the venue appears to care about accessibility.   

WheelyP sent us a fantastic review of his families experience at Cadbury World at Birmingham.  “All exhibitions have been designed to accommodate wheelchair users, the train ride even has a car for a wheelchair user - thankfully short and definitely aimed at younger kids (not 15yr olds)”. WheelyP gives more details in his review about how different parts of the exhibition have been made accessible to disabled people.  He also mentions that it may be more suited to younger members of the family.  Overall, sounds like a great day out. 

Dizzy, who is a new reviewer on Euan’s Guide, told us about his experience at Newbiggin Maritime Centre.  He had the opportunity to try out beach wheelchairs for the first time.  Sounds like fun! “They have three beach 'Hippocampe' wheelchairs to hire (free but best to book). These are three different sizes, so suitable for small children, teens and adults.”  The centre also has an accessible changing places toilet available.  All these facilities make for a stress-free, free, fun day out for all the family, come rain or shine!

If you’re interested in accessible sports, new reviewer M_B06 recommends Inverclyde National Sports Centre in Largs as an accessible place to stay and visit during sporting events. “Good routes. The staff are lovely, gave me an alarm if a fire alarm happens during the night. Good sleep; the room is lovely. Breakfast was good.”

Suranne20 visited the Palace Theatre for the first time in Manchester and sent us a review of her experience. She talks in her review about having been to theatre shows before and having a negative experience this time; the Palace Theatre was different. This was thanks to the help she received from staff on the night of her visit: “I am so grateful to Sam and the other ushers. I am looking at other shows to book. THANK YOU, IT WAS A NIGHT TO REMEMBER.” We love to hear about venues that are constantly working to improve their disabled access – if you work for a business or organisation, make sure you check out our helpful tips and resources.

Places to Eat If you live in or are visiting the Cambridge area, then Aj highly recommends the John Barleycorn Pub as a good place to eat with friends and family. In this review, the pub has a 4.5-star rating. “There is step-free access to the rear entrance of the building from the carpark. The rear entrance door was a little stiff when we visited. There is step-free access when inside. The outside seating area at the front of the pub has three wooden rectangular picnic tables.” A great place to meet up, whatever the weather.

TinaHodgkinson has been out and about in London with friends visiting. Ole and Steen Tina gives the café a five star review. “This is a lovely small chain of cafes. The food is delicious and of exceptional quality. Highly recommend the vanilla festive bun, which we both had, only available in the pre-lent period.”

Places to stay: Fizz, who is a new reviewer, sent us a five-star review of The Homelands Trust in Fife. This is the third time she has visited with friends and family, and she says it certainly won't be the last. “Lundin Links and the East Neuk area provide a vast array of fabulous places to eat and great places to visit.” There are plenty more positive reviews of Homelands Trust in Fife, make sure you check them all out!

Niall, who is a manual wheelchair user, visited the School Farm Bed and Breakfast in Bristol with his family and gave it a four-star review. the school farm. While the bed and breakfast has some limitations in terms of accessibility, Niall said, “This was a really nice surprise. The couple that run the place were really helpful and friendly and have clearly put a lot of time and care into making it a good experience for their customers.”

Review of the month - February

We have received lots of amazing reviews this month, and this has made choosing our review of the month very difficult! The review we have chosen is Suranne20 at the Palace Theatre in Manchester. This review shows how help from the staff at a venue can make all the difference to someone's experience and give them the confidence to visit again and that there is always an opportunity to improve disabled access to make disabled people feel welcome and valued
