Venue Description

The Wien Museum is an open house, committed to a pluralistic, cosmopolitan, and progressive society. The aim is to be a cultural resource and inspiring place for everyone living in Vienna as well as for the city’s visitors. The institution strives to ensure maximum accessibility across all its platforms: exhibitions, events, publications, and digital offerings. It also aims to play an active role in Vienna’s public sphere, inviting individuals and communities to help represent the city in all its diversity. The museum’s collection comprises well over a million objects, from the most mundane everyday objects to rare, precious, high-quality art and items. Spanning the entire history of Vienna, it is among the most comprehensive holdings of any city museum. The institution is committed to expanding, preserving, and researching this extraordinary collection.

Accessibility

You can reach all parts of the Wien Museum Karlsplatz without having to use steps. Tactile floor markings, tactile plans and a tactile model of the building offers visitors mutiple opportunities to orientate themselves and navigate the building and permanent exhibition. There are accessible toilets on every floor and a Changing Place in the basement. This can be accessed without having to buy a ticket. The Exhibition The exhibition has German and English subtitles and Austrian Sign Language (ÖGS), as does the free digital guide. Audio descriptions and wall texts are also available via the guide and screenreader compatible. Audiovisual stations are equipped with induction loops and the possibility to connect using one's own headphones (3.5mm). Stations with only audio content also have transcripts. An "accessibility layer" can be activated on touchscreen-based information stations that allows content to be read aloud (in English or German) and navigated through gestures. There are many hands-on and tactile stations in the exhibition, designed according to the mutisensory principle. Many also feature Braille (German) and further descriptive content via the digital guide. The permanent exhibition is over three floors and is free to visit.
