December 2023 Review Roundup

Christmas Tree in the Hotel in Prague

In this month’s roundup, we have quite an interesting mix of venues that have been visited by our volunteers both at home and abroad. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to submit reviews in 2023. It's thanks to our amazing volunteers that we can share disabled access information, which we know gives disabled people and their families the confidence to visit somewhere new. We hope to hear from you all in 2024!

Places to Eat

If you're looking for somewhere to go out to eat this Christmas with family and friends, then take a look at these recommendations.

RolandChalk gives the Santander Work Café in Jersey a five-star rating. “A stylish coffee bar in the entrance to Santander Bank. It has a wheelchair-accessible toilet and plenty of space to move around the café.”

Valisle gives the ‘Doon the Beach café in Stevenson a 4.5-star rating. She comments, “As a mobility scooter user, I can confirm that access is easy for everyone. Various diets catered for. The food is all freshly cooked and very tasty. Staff are really helpful and friendly.”

IJ highly recommends trying the Thai food served at Rosa’s Thai in Edinburgh. He also speaks about how friendly the staff are and the accessibility of the restaurant. “All delicious. Reasonable prices. £55 for two including drinks and coffee and tip. There is a bell beneath the menu outside, which you ring which lets them know you are there, and they bring a ramp to get in.”

Things to do

If you enjoy going to music, gigs and concerts, then these next two venues come highly recommended by our volunteer reviewers.

Niamphy72 recently visited The O2 in London and was very happy with her experience.“Recently visited the O2 arena for a concert. I am ery happy with the experience I had; I found the facilities to be very accessible, and the staff were also very attentive and accommodating.”

While visiting Sheffield, Katheryn_Leia had a brilliant experience In The Leadmill. ,T a local venue for music gigs. “The Leadmill has level access and replied to my email about accessibility quickly.”This positive outcome left her with a very optimistic feeling about possibly returning to attend other events. “This is the first gig I’ve been to since becoming disabled that didn’t leave me feeling disadvantaged, othered, or prevented from fully participating.”

If you live in Glasgow and have  last-minute Christmas shopping to do, then CaroleQ highlights the range of accessible toilets that are available in Silverburn shopping centre. As well as having spacious and well-equipped accessible toilets, she said: ”They also have two rooms with toilet facilities but the rooms are vast and have changing beds in them with straps and hoists as well as a wet room area and a shower head that allows the person to be showered while on the bed or in the wet area if required.” Carole would like to say thank you to Silverburn shopping centre for going above and beyond in providing these facilities.

Places to stay

GaryS has been on his travels this month and visited the Clarion Congress Hotel in Prague. Gary rates his experience with 4.5 stars. “Fantastic hotel approx three miles from city centre close to Vysocanska metro station. Large spacious rooms. Shopping mall attached to the hotel.” Gary also comments on the accessibility of the hotel rooms. “The accessible rooms are extremely spacious, and the bathrooms in the rooms are a very good size.”

Review of the Month - December

This month, all of the reviews that we have received have raised some really important points about accessibility and how to make venues accessible to disabled people. This month's review of the month goes to CaroleQ when she visited Silverburn shopping Centre in Glasgow. Carol highlights the importance of accessible toilets in her review, and the shopping centre’s range of accessible toilets with plenty of space and equipment makes it so much easier, safer and more enjoyable for disabled people to visit, with confidence.
