Venue Description
York Art Gallery first opened its doors to the public in 1879 for the second Yorkshire Fine Art and Industrial Exhibition, later becoming the City Art Gallery in 1892. The gallery has recently undergone a major redevelopment project and reopened its doors on 1 August 2015. The redevelopment has created 60% more display space including a dedicated Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA), along with other improvements including disabled access, new shops and a cafe, and a new outside space called the Artists Garden.Accessibility
We are fully accessible to wheelchair users. There are two ramps either side of the gallery's main entrance on Exhibition Square. The central door is power-assisted. The gallery is on two floors with a lift located in the gallery foyer. Please note that the doors to the gallery spaces are not automatic - a member of our Welcome Team is always positioned on each gallery to assist with such doors if required.

Assistance dog facilities
Assistance dog exercise facilities
Guide dogs and Assistance dogs are welcome. We ask that they are appropriately trained, supervised, and kept with you at all times as we do have many objects on open display. Where possible, assistance dog owners should bring their Assistance Dog UK (ADUK) identification book and animals should wear the appropriate tabard or harness. Guide dogs and Assistance dogs can be exercised on-lead in the Artists' Garden, which is located behind York Art Gallery.
Other assistance dog facilities
Water can be provided on request outside the Gallery entrance.
