Venue Description

Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve was the first nature reserve owned by the National Trust when it bought an initial 2 acres of land way back in 1899. The nature reserve is a unique remnant of un-drained fenland, which once covered the vast lowlands of East Anglia. The reserve has over 9000 recorded species including rarities such as hen harriers, bittern, numerous dragonflies, moths & wildfowl. The reserve can be explored on foot, bike or boat. The Wicken Fen Vision , is an ambitious landscape scale conservation project to extend the existing nature reserve over an area of 53 sq Km from Wicken Fen to the outskirts of Cambridge.

Accessibility

Access to the Visitor Centre via flat surface, entrance doors always open when Visitor Centre open. Two manual wheelchairs are available for loan from the Visitor Centre. Automatic doors to exit Visitor Centre onto main reserve. There is boardwalk access around the reserve, 1200mm wide with edges, suitable for wheelchairs & motorised buggies. The boardwalk provides access to the fen in a 3/4 mile loop. Two wildlife hides on the boardwalk have disabled access. The Lodes Way, a hard surfaced cycleway is suitable for walkers, wheelchairs, motorised buggies and bikes provides access to newer areas of the reserve. Two disabled trikes are available for hire from the cycle hire centre. Outdoor picnic tables around café, Visitor Centre and main car-park can accommodate wheelchairs.
