Venue Description

Situated in the heart of Cornwall, Wheal Martyn tells the story of Cornwall's largest mining industry, china clay and is set within two former Victorian clay works amongst acres of woodland and nature. China clay is the secret ingredient found in products we all use everyday - from ceramics to paint and cosmetics to paper and much more! Wheal Martyn is the perfect attraction to visit whatever the weather with an indoor Discovery Centre and historic building to explore as well as acres of grounds and nature trails, You'll discover stories and tales from the industry which shaped the landscape and lives of people in mid-Cornwall and see working waterwheels, tools and machinery. Enjoy the unique and historic Wheal Martyn at your own pace, take a guided tour, follow a map or follow your nose and see what you can find.

Accessibility

Due to the historic nature of the Wheal Martyn grounds, access to some parts of the site is limited. The interactive gallery, shop and café are fully accessible and every effort has been made to make as many areas of the wider site as accessible as possible. Visitors with enquiries concerning accessibility issues are strongly encouraged to ring (01726 850362) before visiting to discuss their needs with our staff. Visitors should note that: • The country park is set on a hillside. • There are uneven paths around the historic and nature trails. • There are sets of steps at various locations around the historic and nature trails. • The Pit viewing platform is a half mile walk up hill, with several flight of steps and uneven paths along the route. • Some areas of the site may be unavailable to the public at short notice; for example, when blasting is taking place at Wheal Martyn Pit, the viewing platform will be off limits for safety reasons.

Toilets

The accessible toilet is located in the entrance atrium with level access from the car park and the café and a ramp from the shop. There are grab rails and easy turn taps in the toilet.

Staff

Staff and volunteers have received Disability Awareness and Deaf Awareness Training which has been delivered by Heritage Ability.
