Venue Description

Our aim is to amaze and amuse all our visitors with an incredible collection of curiosities from the 127 year history of the University of Liverpool. We believe the exhibits you’ll find at the Victoria Gallery & Museum give you an experience that’s unique from other Liverpool museums. Where else would you find the world’s most important display of false teeth under the same roof as an exhibition of fine art? We’re also very proud that these weird and wonderful items are housed in our most prized exhibit - the Victoria Building! Opened as the Victoria Gallery and Museum in May 2008 by HRH The Princess Royal, our Grade II listed building, designed by Alfred Waterhouse has been a central part of University life for over a century. As a celebration of Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture, the building has been carefully renovated and transformed into a public venue for all to enjoy. The ground floor is home to the Waterhouse Café and the upper floors house our art galleries, museum and lecture theatre. We hold regular events for families, schools and adults and we strive to be accessible to all visitors. We aim to provide an excellent service to all visitors and welcome your feedback in order that we may continually improve.

Accessibility

The Main Entrance has level access and automatic sliding doors. Reception has a low level counter. There is stair and lift access to the Galleries on the First Floor, and the Museum on the Second floor, along with the Leggate Theatre. The floor is marble and even on the ground floor. Stairs are concrete, evenly spaced and broad, with handrail on the right as you ascend.  Gallery Floors are parquet wood and level. Lighting in the Tate hall and in some of the Galleries is dim to preserve exhibits. The lift to all floors has Braille labelled controls. A quiet area can be located on the first floor outside of the main toilets.

Toilets

Public WCs On the ground floor to the right of Reception, through double doors and then to your left, there are public WCs, including one accessible WC which has an alarm cord and handrails. On the first floor there are male, female and accessible, with alarm cord, WCs, with a baby changing facility in the female WC On the 2nd Floor adjacent to the Leggate Theatre there are male female and accessible toilets, again with alarm call system.

Staff

The Visitor Services Team are always on hand to ensure you have a pleasant visit and deal with any questions or enquiries. All members of the team wear light blue shirts or t-shirts.

The quadrangle is situated directly behind our building and is a lovely grassy area that is completely pedestrianised.
