Overview
The Great Tapestry of Scotland is stunning, with panels covering everything from the formation of prehistoric Scotland to the Battle of Bannockburn to the Enlightenment and up to the opening of the Scottish Parliament. The tapestries themselves are not only informative but also works of art. All of them are beautiful, vibrant in colour and full of little extra details, such as animals (I love the tiny Belted Galloway cows in one panel), flowers or the shorthand in the panel about newspapers. We spent all day in the museum, and had lunch at the lovely Stitchers restaurant, then browsed the excellent shop. I was on a mobility scooter and my mother had a rollator. The lift meant that we could get upstairs to the tapestry exhibition without any problems, and the accessible toilets on the ground floor were spacious and clean. There was a public car park near the Tapestry building, where there were plenty of parking spaces. Our day out at the Great Tapestry of Scotland was the highlight of my holiday in the Scottish Borders!
Transport & Parking
There is only one disabled parking bay at the museum, but there is a public car park not far from the building where you can park.
Access
Across from the toilets, there was a lift that took you up to the exhibition space. There was plenty of seating upstairs, and magnifying glasses were provided for seeing the details on the tapestries.
Toilets
The accessible toilets were on the ground floor, and were both spacious and clean. There was room for a scooter or rollator or wheelchair in the disabled toilets.
