Venue Description
The Cooper Gallery is a vibrant creative art-space in the heart of Barnsley town centre, it has a regular programme of contemporary touring exhibitions and exciting events. The Gallery is home to the Cooper Trustees collection of 17th to 20th century paintings, watercolours and drawings by artists including JMW Turner, Wadsworth and Atkinson Grimshaw. The permanent collection now contains over 400 works from a wide range of artists including JMW Turner, John Sell Cotman, Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell and Roger Fry. It is from these permanent collections that themed exhibitions are created to hang alongside an exciting programme of temporary exhibitions. There is a shop onsite selling a range of local crafts and other items There are two cafes - the Cooper Cafe (cash only) and Joshua's CafeAccessibility
There is a ramp to the entrance door and a push pad for automatic opening There is a platform lift to the ground floor of the Gallery, and a lift to the top floor of the Gallery. The rest of the Gallery is level access. There is portable and permanent seating available in the Gallery Some of our paintings are audio described We have a visual story, Visit England access guide and 360 tour of the Gallery available on our website There is an accessible toilet. The nearest Changing Places facilities are in Barnsley Town Hall or Library @ the Lightbox There are relaxed/quiet openings once a month, please visit our website for details and dates There is a portable hearing loop available from reception The Cooper Garden is often a relaxing and quiet space, particularly when the Gallery first opens or near closing time outside of school holidays.
