Venue Description

The Battle of Britain Memorial, which features the National Memorial to the Few, is a stunning tribute to the heroes of the Battle of Britain set on top of the White Cliffs of Dover at Capel-le-Ferne, just outside Folkestone in Kent. The central Memorial is a statue of a seated airman looking out over the Channel to France, while the site includes the Christopher Foxley-Norris Memorial Wall, which lists the names of the fewer than-3000 men who took part in the Battle, and a replica Hurricane and Spitfire. A new indoor Scramble Experience provides a high-tech, audio-visual introduction to the events of 1940 and the site includes a cafe and well-stocked gift shop. All the attractions, both inside and outside, are accessible to visitors in a wheelchair and there are disabled toilets, reserved disabled parking spaces close to the (automatic) main doors and a lift to the first floor cafe. All our visitors are guaranteed a warm welcome.

Accessibility

There are free disabled parking bays for cars immediately outside the Wing building and easy access to the building via a level pathway. Front and rear doors are automatic and there is a lift to the first floor. Entry to the exhibition inside the building is via a screen that is opened by staff. The main video wall in The Scramble Experience features a specially-commissioned film which runs regularly throughout the day and is subtitled.

They are modern, fully-specced disabled facilities in a building that was opened in March 2015.

Staff

No specific training but staff are mostly local volunteers who love their job and take great delight in welcoming visitors of all kinds to this fantastic location.

Assistance dogs are welcome but dogs are not allowed off the lead in the area around the Memorial. There is a clifftop path that bounds the site (probably not suitable for those who need an assistance dog).
