Venue Description

You can visit the cloister, but due to access restrictions in place as a precautionary measure while we undertake high level masonry inspections, there is currently no visitor access to the rest of the site. 29 Mar to 30 Sept: Daily, 10am to 4.30pm (last entry 4pm) 1 Oct to 28 Mar: Fri & Sat, 10am to 4pm (last entry 3.30pm) A monument to human and devine love, Sweetheart Abbey was named for its founder, Lady Dervorgilla, who was buried here with the embalmed heart of her beloved husband. War inflicted much damage to the buildings. But the abbey church, with a stone effigy of the founder, survives almost intact.

Accessibility

Approach to site From the car park the entrance to the site is approximately 90m along a level tarmac road. Visitor Centre There is a step up into the visitor centre. Monument Sweetheart Abbey is on relatively level ground. The main routes around the monument are surfaced in gravel or short cut grass. Surfaces are firmer during, or following dry weather. There is a good view of the remains of the abbey from the cloister path, which is surfaced in gravel. There are numerous archaeological remains within the grass around the site and in the nave, which can be difficult to see. There are steps down into some rooms, but these can also all be viewed from the cloister path. There is one step up from the porch into the nave.
