Overview
We visited the castle whilst on a motorhome holiday in the area. Having researched the site, we decided to use my normal manual wheelchair with freewheel. This allowed easier movement over the many cobbles, but also more ability to access the inside spaces. I'm normally pretty independent and don't need help getting around but my husband had to help me a lot around the castle grounds because it is very steep in places and lots of cobbles.
Transport & Parking
We drove by the day before to find out about parking, as the website makes it clear that motorhomes can't park there. The car park staff told us they will always make room for blue badge holders but it's best to come early, before it gets too busy. So we did and parking was dead easy. They put us at the bottom end of the car park with plenty of space to unload my chair.
Access
I think they have made this venue about as accessible as possible. There is level entry into most areas, with lifts, ramps, etc where needed. For me, the grounds were the most difficult part, particularly the entrance area. I had to stop in the pouring rain, halfway up a steep cobbled hill to show tickets (on my phone) and my English Heritage card. Other people in the queue were not at all helpful. I had to turn sideways so I didn't tip over backwards whilst queuing, but then people just pushed in front of me. The ticket lady did nothing to help. Once we were in, it was easier and with hubby's help, we got to most places okay.
Toilets
There were several accessible toilets, so I never had to go far to find one. There are toilets inside the cafe and in most main areas. They all had grab rails. In one of the toilets, the red cord was tied firmly around the upright grab rail. Apart from it not being available to use, it was very difficult to lower the rail without setting off the alarm.
Staff
Most of the staff were lovely and very helpful. The car park staff were absolutely fantastic! The lady checking tickets could definitely have been more helpful and it wouldn't have been difficult to position herself under the tunnel for shelter and on a slightly flatter part of the route in.
