Venue Description

St John’s is Cardiff’s oldest building after the Castle, and, over 800 years on, remains a centre of worship and haven of peace for all. Founded in the 12th century as a chapel serving the Castle, only a single pillar survives from the original building, burnt down by Owain Glyndwr in 1404. Today’s church largely dates from the rebuilding, begun in 1440. The 130ft tower, dated 1473, is one of Wales’ finest. Two outer aisles were added in restorations from 1886 to 1897. After old St Mary’s church was destroyed by floods in 1607, St John’s became the city parish church, hosting civic events to this day. Details of other important features, including the Herbert Chapel, and the 1984 ‘Father Willis’ organ, restored with help from the Welsh Heritage Lottery Fund, are given in the guide book, £1. New glass west doors convey the Church’s continuing openness to all. Church and Café are open Monday-Saturday, 10am to 3pm, with services on Sundays at 10am and 6pm, and weekday lunchtimes.

Accessibility

There is wheelchair access via the South Gate and South Porch (near Cardiff Market entrance). and a large door disabled toilet with rails etc. Most of the church, except the Tower Porch, Chancel / Choir, and Herbert Chapel can be reached without steps. Space is allocated for those using wheelchairs and those with them during services, concerts and other events. The café is upstairs, though the tables and chairs in the churchyard are wheelchair accessible, and at any time of year staff will bring down drinks and food.

Toilets

There is one disabled toilet (key held by the café) with a wide door, rails and easy use taps. If the cafe is not open, see if the Parish Administrator or other staff member is available, in the Vestry Office, beyond the choir stalls.
