Shakespeare's Schoolroom & Guildhall

Church Street, Stratford-upon-Avon, CV37 6HB, United Kingdom | 01789 868262 | Website

Venue Description

Shakespeare’s Schoolroom & Guildhall is where William Shakespeare was inspired to become the world’s great playwright. It is not only where he spent his schooldays, but where he first experienced theatre and recent research indicates that it was in the Schoolroom that he penned his first work. The significance of this incredible chapter of history is brought to life for visitors in an immersive experience that includes the opportunity to take part in a lesson just as Shakespeare would have done 450 years ago. Visitors will also discover the importance of the Guild of the Holy Cross to civic and cultural life in medieval Stratford-upon-Avon, which is one of only a handful of towns where a timber-framed Guildhall has survived.

Accessibility

Within Shakespeare's Schoolroom & Guildhall we have an accessible toilet on the ground floor, adjacent to the main entrance. We also have an accessible lift for use by anyone with impaired mobility, including wheelchair users, elderly visitors and parents with pushchairs. It is designed to carry the majority of Type A and B wheelchairs, but not Type C wheelchairs or electric scooters due to their weight and size. Please ask our team for assistance if you need to use the lift. There is level access throughout the building at ground and first floor level, with the exception of the first floor landing to the Victorian staircase. Threshold ramps have been installed where required. Seating is available throughout the building. There is an induction loop in the ground floor reception area, the ground floor counting house and in the first floor Tudor classroom. We are delighted to have had one of our 18th century desks modified to allow full accessibility for wheelchair users in the Georgian classroom. The desk was the work of Tim Ross Bain, a local Master Cabinetmaker, who increased the size of the surface and created a hand-winding mechanism to allow the desk to be raised and lowered to accommodate different user heights.
