This review is especially helpful for those who have or use the following: Wheelchair, Mobility Scooter
Overview
When we arrived at the museum I saw that there were only 3 disabled parking spaces and we couldn't get through the normal route to the entrance due to a massive curb - nevertheless, we arrived at the entrance on a freezing cold day in Peterhead! When we got to the entrance we were greeted by the receptionist who informed me that unfortunately due to the number of steep ramps, my mobility scooter would not manage to go round the prison so offered me a wheelchair. While this was obviously disappointing news - something which they never disclosed to me on their website or on social media, I was still rather excited to go, so quickly decided that I would just take the wheelchair. It was me, my dad and my 2 brothers who went, which made me think if only me, my dad and one of my brothers went, which was originally planned how would my dad manage to push us both? We would have needed to go home which would have been very disappointing. Then the receptionist came through with the wheelchair and said it was the only wheelchair that they had, which could definitely prove a problem. The wheelchair that they gave me was absolutely awful and I would feel sorry for any wheelchair user who had to use this, the wheelchair had two flat tires, the footrests were only about an inch off the ground and the footplates were facing the opposite directions. To put the cherry on top of the cake, the receptionist said it was a new wheelchair - if I was them, I would be asking for a refund. We then went through to the shop area to pay for our tour, the carers got in for free and we were then told that we would be guided a different route. You were given headphones as part of the audio-guided tour which was very useful for my partially sighted brother. The audio tour was extremely interesting and thought-provoking. We then used a lift to get to the cafe and the second floor of the hospital. The lift was only big enough for one wheelchair at a time so we had to go up separately and you had to keep pressing the button until you reached the top. The cafe was quite tight and very busy so we never went, but overall a good day out.
Transport & Parking
Stagecoach bus stop available directly outside of the building. There were only 3 disabled car parking spaces.
Access
Poor disabled access, if you were on your own then I think that you would struggle but I will not elaborate any further then I already have.
Toilets
The toilet was reasonably large and had everything that I needed.
Staff
We first met the receptionist was an extremely nice person was a very nice person, however, she knew very little about the wheelchair. Our 'tour guide' was very helpful throughout our tour.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
I was meant to go here with my college last year which makes me think how on earth would I of done that?

Dear Gordon, Thanks for your review and disappointed to see at times you felt we let your visit down. Can I work through your comments step by step. First of all there is a sentence in bold in our "Visit Us" section that reads: "Please Note: No Electric Wheel Chair access. Assistance Dogs Only (No Pets)" and this page also carries all other information on how to visit and what you will find upon arrival. Although only 3 marked spaces outside the main door for disabled parking there is a large sign at the top of the drive saying "Driveway reserved for Disabled Parking Only" so in effect the whole driveway is set aside for disabled access, which then allows clear access right through the front door. In relation to the wheelchair [ it was indeed new, I accept this is far from acceptable to find it in such a condition and yes indeed we have complained to the company concerned]. The lift outside the hospital was newly installed in early 2019 as at the time this was the only problem area we had for accessibility and indeed when we first considered opening the museum we were officially told we did not need to support any disabled access as we came under the banner of a "historic building" so only required to add a line on our website saying " No disability access". However, we were very keen to do what we could, thus installing all the ramps, access doors etc concluding with the external lift to support disabled access the best we could, with significant obstacles to over come, but we are proud of our achievements. In relation to support. Again our staff have supported 100's of wheelchair visits, all of whom appreciate the staffs support when requested to do so and this support is always on hand when requested, but we would never impose on anyone's visit without being asked. That all said I am pleased to see you still enjoyed the experience, there is a lot still to open up, so hope to see you back again in the future and hope the above helps to smooth the way to a more streamlined visit if you do return and if so please call ahead any day between 10-3 on 01779 482200 to make us aware of your requirements and I know our staff will be delighted to assist in any way requested of them. Regards Alex Geddes, Operations Manager
