BT Studio - Completely inaccessible for mobility-impaired
Visit date:
This review is especially helpful for those who have or use the following: Walking Aid, Wheelchair, Powerchair
Overview
This excellent little studio hosts some of Oxford's most exciting theatre. As part of Oxford Playhouse, it really should have (at least some) attempt at disabled access…
Transport & Parking
On street disabled parking around the venue is plentiful and easy to find.
Access
It seems there is no way someone with moderate mobility impairment could access this venue. The studio is on the second floor, up four long flights of steps. There is also a step from the pavement. Once inside the studio itself, the raked seating (not always used) is very steep, accessed by steps or narrow aisles.
Toilets
No accessible loos. Small cubicles on the first floor.
Staff
Staff are very friendly, but there's nothing they can do to overcome the access problems. Would probably be very helpful for those with visual and audio impairment.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
As the BT Studio is part of - and is physically joined to - Oxford Playhouse, surely it might be possible to knock through an accessible route from the main theatre? If this has been done, it is not advertised and should be. This is a great little theatre. It really should be adapted.
Venue Manager responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to review the BT Studio, and we're really glad you enjoy the works performed there. Unfortunately the internal layouts of the Oxford Playhouse and BT Studio mean that the two buildings cannot be linked at third floor level. We do recognise the access issues to the BT Studio, and have a mobility stairclimber in place. For anyone wishing to use this facility please inform the ticket office when booking.
