Overview
I assumed that an international hotel chain would have an excellent accessible bedroom for our 3 night stay, where we were charged over £200 a night. Big mistake! Our experience was hugely disappointing! In hindsight, a closer reading of the hotel’s description of ‘Guest Room Accessibility’ should have raised alarm bells! Marriott Bonvoy’s accessible bedroom design ethos seems to be that ALL disabled people only use wheelchairs - all disabled people using their guest bathroom only need to transfer from their chair to the toilet seat - using the single horizontal grab rail on the wall - they then wheel across to the huge (600mm x 500mm basin) - no grab rails are provided either side of the basin (fine if you only sit in a wheelchair!) - they then wheel across to the wet room shower and have a shower sitting in their chair!! Really!!! - a single vertical grab rail is provided next to the shower - about as useful as a chocolate teapot! - no grab rail on the wide bathroom door to assist closing. The accessible bedroom itself was very clean with great views, but had a very large rotating chair - took up a huge amount of room, there was NO storage space for clothes, etc. except for 4 coat hangers on 4 wall hooks. We stored our clothes on the very wide window cill. There was a higher and lower view hole in the entrance door but the lower one could not be viewed when sitting in a wheelchair! We shall not be returning to a Marriott hotel.
Transport & Parking
No parking available. A side road provides disabled parking for 3 hours max - with blue badge displayed. The road also functions as an informal drop off / pickup area so is very busy. Stratford Shopping Centre multi-storey car park is opposite, but its appearance doesn’t encourage its use.
Access
Getting in and out of the hotel is fine, with level accesss to the front door. Automatic split doors provide access. All of the ground floor is accessible and 3 lifts provide access to the 7 floors of rooms
Toilets
The loos were not signposted but without asking a member of staff we eventually worked it out. Bizarrely, whilst the accessible guest bathrooms have virtually no accessible facilities, the public disabled loo (ground floor) is fully provided with grab rails, drop down bar, etc!
Staff
Helpful if asked, but generally kept themselves to themselves!
