Venue Description

Mackintosh at the Willow includes a 200 seat restaurant in the A listed, original Willow Tea Rooms Building at 217 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow and our new Visitor Centre in the adjacent building at 215 Sauchiehall Street. The famous Tea Rooms first opened in 1903 and are of huge importance to Glasgow’s architectural and cultural heritage. The building is internationally recognised as the only surviving Tea Rooms designed entirely by Scotland's most recognised architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh for local tea entrepreneur and patron Miss Kate Cranston. The building is also considered one of the finest examples in the world of a complete Art Nouveau scheme. After several years of restoration to return them to their former glory, the historic Tea Rooms reopened to the public from July 2018. Open daily, the Tea Rooms serve breakfast, elevenses, light lunches and afternoon teas as well as lighter bites, all in a unique setting. Private events and functions including weddings and corporate events can also be catered for. The new, integrated Visitor Centre includes Retail, Exhibition, Conference and Learning and Education facilities. The Retail Store and Exhibition are open daily. Regular community, creative and arts events are planned throughout the year from September.

Accessibility

Access to the Tea Rooms is through the adjoining Visitor Centre (via the Retail Store) with a gentle slope immediately inside the doors and then level access with wide doors and ample manoeuvering space for manual wheelchairs. There is lift access to all floors in the Tea Rooms excluding the Gallery area and also lift access to the Exhibition area, to the Learning and Education facilities and to the toilets.

Accessible Performances

The Exhibition area in the Visitor Centre is accessible and includes a range of interactive and sensory displays including audio.

Toilets

Toilets are on the basement level in the Visitor Centre, accessed by lift with clean and ample space to manoeuvre a manual wheelchair.
