Venue Description

In a place of wide spaces and big skies, without roads, cars or pollution, simply walking is a profound pleasure. Lundy has a milder climate than the mainland, with more sunshine and less rain. The particular character of Lundy derives from its varied terrain; on the west side, exposed to the Atlantic, there are high and rugged cliffs, on the east, sheltered from the prevailing wind, the coastline is gentler with grassy slopes, trees and many types of wild flowers. This contrast explains the rich diversity of the island's animal and plant life and its attraction to walkers, climbers and divers. People return time and again to the simple pleasures that Lundy affords; the sea is clear, the landscape spectacular, and at night, without competition from street lights, it is truly dark and the stars shine with unfamiliar brilliance.

Accessibility

Lundy island is a challenging site. There is a Tramper available (all-terrain mobility scooter). The Tramper helps people with a temporary or permanent mobility issue. It can be borrowed by people who can walk small distances for example, but could not manage the longer trails without becoming tired. Users do not have to be registered disabled to use it or have a Blue Badge. The Tramper has been provided by Heritage Ability in partnership with Countryside Mobility. Toilets

In Bideford, there is an accessible toilet in middle of the Shore Office building. The toilet requires a RADAR key. A RADAR key is available from Bideford Town Hall (Bridge Street, Bideford,North Devon, EX39 2HS) which is 300 metres from the toilet but, as boarding often takes place before the Town Hall is opened, if you have a RADAR key you should bring it to access the toilet. In Ilfracombe, there is an accessible toilet at the Harbour. This is located on the left hand side as you enter the harbour car park area. The toilet is accessed using a RADAR key. A RADAR key can be obtained from the Harbourmaster Office (35 metres) and Ilfracombe Aquarium (20 metres) but, as these do not normally open before boarding has completed, it is essential that you bring your own RADAR key. There is no accessible toilet on the ship.

Staff and volunteers at Lundy Island have had Disability Awareness and Deaf Awareness training, which has been delivered by Heritage Ability.
