Killhope, the North of England Lead Mining Museum is situated in Upper Weardale high up in the stunning North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With breathtaking scenery, wonderful wildlife including Red Squirrels, underground adventure and fascinating lead mining history there is so much to do and see. Killhope is 450 metres (1500feet) above sea level. We recommend that even in summer you come dressed for adventure and wear warm clothing and sensible footwear so that you can make the most of your visit.
We are very proud of our museum and make every effort to ensure all visitors get the most out of their visit. Although the site is not fully accessible to everyone we are able to provide a motorised scooter ramps to all areas of the main site and can provide a partial mine trip to those with mobility difficulties and who use wheelchairs
Accessibility
The visitor centre including café, shop, exhibition areas and toilet are all on ground level. The entrance door has automatic push pad facility. Most of the site is accessible with ramps to access buildings and there is a motorised scooter for visitors to use but this needs to be booked in advance.
Toilets
There are 2 accessible toilets, one in the visitor centre and one on site at the end of the centre building. Both have grab rails and wide doorways for wheelchair access.
Staff
Information assistants are on site to assist visitors and one member of staff is trained to use sign language.
