Venue Description
Discover how the boy born in this modest house in Dunbar became one of the driving forces behind the modern conservation movement. The exterior has been restored and now looks much as it would have done in 1838 – the year John Muir was born. Inside, you will find three floors of family friendly interactive displays and a warm welcome with well informed staff always available to answer questions. Our absorbing hands on interpretation centre gives you the opportunity to accompany John Muir on the journey of his life, from a boyhood exploring East Lothian's rugged coastline and gently rolling farmland to adventures in the pristine wilderness of the American frontier. John Muir became an inventor, a botanist, a geologist, a glaciologist, a farmer and an artist. He achieved fame as a best selling writer, explorer and environmental campaigner. More than a century on his ideas are more relevant than ever and John Muir continues to inspire people all over the world. Explore the life and legacy of this remarkable man here, in the house where he was born. This unique museum is also the starting point of the John Muir Way – making it the beginning of the journey of a lifetime in more ways than one.
