The Isokon Gallery occupies the former garage of the Grade I listed Isokon building.
The Isokon Building: designed by Wells Coates in 1934 as an experiment in minimalist living, it was home to a range of artists, authors and intellectuals.
The main space in the Isokon Gallery, telling the story of the building, Isokon furniture and the many notable residents.
The Gallery includes reconstructed a kitchen and washroom created from original fittings reclaimed during the 2004 refurbishment.
Isokon furniture pioneered the use of bent plywood. it included the renowned Long Chair by Marcel Breuer and the idiosyncratic Penguin Donkeys by Egon Riss and Ernest Race.
The rear of the gallery places the building in the wider context of Hampstead in the 1930s and each year hosts an exhibition on a connected subject. The 2021 exhibition tells the story of Agatha Christie's time residing in the building.
