Overview

HMS Unicorn is a wooden war ship based on Dundee's Victoria Dock. It is almost 200 years old and has loads of atmosphere on the ship. Wheelchair access is limited to the main deck, but there is more than enough to see here to give you a good idea of how things were when this ship was on the sea.

Transport & Parking

We got the train into Dundee station, and the Unicorn was a 5-10 minute push from there. Easier for the members in the group with powerchairs than for those in manual chairs, but still very manageable as the surfaces were flat. I didn't notice on-street parking nearby, but the Quay is a 2 minute push across the bridge, with parking available there.

Access

The HMS unicorn is very easy to find, as it is a large boat on the water. Access the ship is a little more difficult, as the ramp is very steep. 2 members of our group needed assistance making it on to the ship as the ramp was too steep. It was still possible though with someone to assist. Once on board, the ship was very spacious, so plenty of room to get around and see the features.

The staff member was very helpful and answered any questions we had about the ship and it's history. Really warm welcome from the staff too.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

I really would recommend anyone visiting Dundee to have a look at the Unicorn. It does open a little later than expected (12pm when we were visiting), so keep that in mind. Enjoy!! Also, they have built an accessible loo and information centre directly outside the ship, but they are waiting on permission to open that facility. Hopefully it won't be too long now.
