Opening Times: 29 Mar to 30 Sept: Fri to Tues, 10am to 4.30pm (last entry 4pm). Closed for lunch 1pm to 1.30pm (last entry 12.30pm). 1 Oct to 28 Mar Closed Parade up the grand staircase or scurry up the service stair, venture into the well-appointed kitchen and admire the views over the countryside from the high battlements. This remarkably complete house of the 1500s was the country retreat of the wealthy Wemyss family. Its orchard has been replanted with traditional varieties of apple, pear and plum and has become a haven for butterflies and wildlife

Accessibility

Approach to site Approach to site is 20m from the car park, through a swing gate and along a grass-bar path. The gate can be opened completely to allow wheelchair access. Visitor Centre Visitor centre has step-free access but is very small. Monument The entrance has a stone threshold. The ground floor, including cellars and the kitchen, is relatively level but the floor is uneven in places. There is a step down into the kitchen. Light levels can be low and torches are provided. The first floor, which includes the great hall and private chamber, is up a stone spiral stair of 18 steps with no handrail. The upper levels are accessed by narrow spiral stone staircases with no handrails. Surroundings The castle is located in a large grassed area with several trees. There are picnic tables available and an apple orchard at the site.
