Venue Description

From the rugged battlements of this strategically sited castle you can see how it once dominated Loch Etvie. Outside the ramparts lie a ruined chapel, well-kept grounds and pebbly beaches with views to Mull, Lismore and Morvern. Built by Duncan MacDougall in the 1200s, the castle was captured by Robert the Bruce in 1309. Flora MacDonald was imprisoned here after helping Bonnie Prince Charlie escape Scotland. The three storey - gatehouse built around 1500 is now open to visitors. Opening times: 29 Mar to 30 Sept: Daily, 9.30am to 4.30pm (last entry 4pm). 1 Oct to 28 Mar: Daily except Thur and Fri, 10am to 3.30pm (last entry 3pm). We recommend booking online in advance to guarantee entry.

Accessibility

Approach to site From the car park is 200m along an upward gravel track. From the visitor centre the castle is 25m. Visitor centre The shop has step free access. The display room is reached by a straight stair of 10 steps with a solid handrail. Monument The castle entrance is up 26 steep historic stone steps with a handrail. The main routes within the castle are gravel, tarmac and grass. The battlements are up a modern wooden staircase of 30 steps with handrails on both sides. The gatehouse is accessed via a modern staircase of 12 steps with a handrail. The upper levels of the gatehouse are reached via a narrow 28 step spiral stair with a handrail. The chapel is approached by a 50m rough earth path which is steep in places and can be boggy.
