On your visit, you will be able to access: the Great Hall, the Laigh Hall, first floor gallery, visitor centre, shop and tearoom. There are some minor access restrictions in place in the Great Hall. Explore the high-vaulted halls and gloomy dungeons of this splendid stronghold, perched on a hill above the village. The main tower was built in the 1370s by King Robert II to mark his succession to the throne. Its heritage is explored in the visitor centre. 1 Apr to 30 Sept: Daily, 10am to 5pm (entry slots 10am, 11am, 12 noon, 1.30pm, 2.30pm & 3.30pm) 1 Oct to 31 Mar: Daily, 10am to 4pm (entry slots 10am, 11am, 12 noon, 1.30pm & 2.30pm) Complimentary tours are available with all entry tickets.Accessibility
Approach to site There is a steep, anti-slip-surfaced tarmac path for 120m then 30m of level gravel path up to the castle. Visitor Centre Visitor centre has step-free access. Monument The castle is surrounded by banked grass surfaces. Inside, much of the castle can be seen from the ground floor which is level and has a stone slabbed surface. The first floor is reached by an L-shaped set of 15 steep stone stairs with no handrail. The second floor is reached by a modern metal open backed spiral stair of 38 steps with a handrail. On a dull day the castle can be a little dark, although the inner stairs, lower hall and prison pit have electric lights.
