Venue Description

One of Scotland's finest medieval churches. The lower part of the tower is Romanesque but most of the building was built in the 1200s, and extensively restored in the 1800s. The 15th century choir stalls - amongst the oldest now surviving in Scotland - are carved with real and fantastical beasts. 1 Apr to 30 Sept: Mon-Sat, 9.30am to 5.30pm Sunday, 2pm to 5.30pm Last entry 5pm 1 Oct to 31 Mar: Daily except Sun, 10am to 3.30pm (last entry 3pm). Closed for lunch 12.30pm to 1.30pm (last entry before lunch 12 noon). Please note, the cathedral will occasionally close for private services and events, especially at weekends during the summer. Booking in advance is recommended to guarantee entry.

Accessibility

Approach to site Approach to site is on a level tarmac path approximately 50m from the street to the south entrance. The south door is accessed by a ramp, but the door itself is very heavy. Monument The Nave, Choir and Chapterhouse are on the level on stone or tile floors. Access to the tower is up four wooden steps with a single handrail on the left. Access to the Clement Chapel is by a short flight of stone spiral stairs with a single cast-iron hand rail on the left. The gallery is reached by a narrow stone spiral staircase with no handrails. Surroundings The cathedral is surrounded by a graveyard. This has tarmac paths, but is mostly grassed.

The nearest adapted toilet is at the Cathedral Halls on The Cross approximately 50m from the Cathedral entrance. It is open 09:30 – 12:00. It is closed on weekends.
