Venue Description

Derby Theatre has a long and rich history of delivering high quality drama to audiences. Previously Derby Playhouse, our unique new partnership with University of Derby and an Arts Council England award of strategic funding, which will be built on via our entry into their National Portfolio in April 2015, now means Derby Theatre is transforming from a traditional producing house to an organisation of training, mentorship and artistic excellence.

Accessibility

Derby Theatre is firmly committed to enabling all their patrons to participate in performances equally with dignity and respect. WIthin the restrictions of the building itself, the team make every effort possible to ensure that all events and performances can be accessed by those with access requirements. We operate a scheme for those who require somebody to be present in order to assist them to readily access theatre shows and as such we allow members to buy a seat for themselves at the standard rate and one for an essential companion at no cost*. Derby Theatre's Assisted Access Scheme is free to join and a short application form is available from the box office or to download. ACCESSIBLE TOILETS -Derby Theatre has large fully accessible toilets on every level of the theatre. If you require urgent access to the toilet because of an impairment / disability you can make this known to staff at any time and they will ensure that you are quickly pointed toward the nearest toilet with discretion and dignity. This can and will include both accessible toilets and staff toilets where necessary. Access Card holders need only to show their card with the WC symbol.

Accessible Performances

Derby Theatre provide accessible and rest performances for all produced shows. Where possible, provision is made for received work. Accessible performance include BSL interpretation and Audio description, including pre-performance touch tours. The Theatre is open to accommodating any requests for additional provision where this is practicable.

Awards List

We are proud to be an accredited Provider with CredAbility and to be able to acknowledge the locally developed Access Card. We are committed to ensuring that we are able to remove, replace or reduce the impact of barriers faced by our disabled customers and welcome feedback.

Staff

Our staff are experienced and enthusiastic in delivering the best possible experience for all our visitors. Training has been provided in disability awareness and support resources are available to support communication in the form of BSL sign cards. The Front of House team regular participate in engagement with work experience placements for individuals with a variety of learning difficulties and access requirements.

Assistance dog facilities

Assistance dog exercise facilities

Assistance dogs are welcome in all areas of the building and can be accommodated for breaks and relief in the grass area behind the Theatre. Staff are always happy to have access dogs seated with them in the event that they are not required inside the auditorium and we gladly provide water and company.
