The grounds are accessible. Due to restrictions in place as a precautionary measure while we undertake high level masonry inspections, there is currently no visitor access inside the castle or stables. Crichton Castle has been home to medieval lords and Renaissance noblemen. its sturdy tower of the late 1300s stands by a sophisticated façade created 200 years later. the castle's ruins, framed by a secluded valley, were celebrated by writer Walter Scott and artist J.M.W. Turner.Accessibility
Approach to site The site is approached through a latched kissing gate 1m wide and along a 400m long rough dirt track that can flood. This has some steep gradients up to 1.8 for 20m. There is a wooden gate 1m wide into the castle enclosure and then a short cobbled section. Visitor Centre The ticket office has a small threshold and a timber step up with no handrail. Monument The ground floor is generally on the level and consists of the Courtyard, Chancellor’s room, Crichton’s lodgings, Bothwell range, Bakehouse and the Towerhouse floor. The surface is mostly loose gravel. The first floor can be accessed by two sets of wide straight stone stairs with a handrail and one curved tapering stair without handrail from courtyard. It consists of the Hall, Kitchen, Pantries, Dining Room, Parlour and Old Hall. The pit prison is accessed by a stone staircase with 10 steps and handrail. The Stables are 36m away from the castle over rough, grass covered terrain. The floor surface inside is level and covered with loose gravel.
