Closed for lunch 12 noon to 1pm. 1 Oct to 30 Apr: Closed An isolated tower house in the Cairngorms that was a residence of the high-status Forbes family. After Culloden in 1746, it was converted to become a Redcoat garrison fortress, largely to suppress Jacobite activity. Adaptations and additions included the distinctive star-shaped perimeter wall. The reconstructed barrack rooms offer a window into military life in the late 1700s.Accessibility
Approach to site Approach to site is 350m over loose gravel up a hill with a gradient of 1:5 and through a 75cm wide kissing gate. Visitor Centre Visitor centre and shop are on the first floor and reached up 12 stone steps with a single handrail. There is an induction loop at the counter. Monument At ground floor level is a reconstructed whisky still. At first floor level via the visitor centre is an officer’s apartment and reconstruction of the kitchen. From the first floor a spiral stone staircase of 30 steps with a single handrail leads to the cellars. A timber staircase of 14 steps with a single rail leads to a reconstruction of the soldier’ barracks on the second floor. The third and fourth floor are reached by further flights of 14 timber steps each with a single handrail.
