Venue Description

The Church Hill Theatre is a former church in the Morningside area of Edinburgh, designed in the late 1800s by Scottish architect Hippolyte Blanc, renowned for his Gothic revival style. Blanc was a prolific architect and antiquarian, who was involved in some high profile restoration projects, including Edinburgh Castle and John Knox House on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. This striking Category B listed pink sandstone church was converted into a theatre in the 1960s and over nearly 50 years has gained an established reputation as one of Scotland’s leading non-professional theatres. As well as being home to many of Edinburgh’s amateur theatrical companies, it is a popular venue for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Church Hill Theatre is owned by the City of Edinburgh Council and managed by the Assembly Rooms Team. Full of character and history, the venue has been refurbished and is available for event hire.

Accessibility

To gain access to the building there are two gently sloping ramps that lead to the double glass front doors which are accessible by push pad. Once inside the building you will be greeted by the Church Hill Theatre front of house staff. A staff member will assist you into the bar area if required. The Auditorium is on the first floor and accessed by either stairs or lift. If you require the use of the lift, staff will assist with the double doors into the lift area. The lift is large and spacious and does have a grab rail and alarm button. The lift also features spoken messages indicating which floor the lift is on and whether the doors are opening or closing. Within the building there are call buttons for assistance if required. Accessible toilets are on both the ground and first floor.

The Church Hill Theatre has accessible toilets on the ground and first floor. They both have grab rails, cord alarms and lowered sinks.
