Venue Description
Castle Drogo was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens for self-made millionaire Julius Drewe. It looks ancient, but this remarkable building was only constructed 100 years ago, the last castle ever built in England. From the beginning it has suffered from water penetration and is undergoing a 6 year conservation project that will be reaching completion in 2019. Inside you can explore rooms redisplayed with collection and tapestries back in while other areas, which are still in the building site, have become storage areas. Outside explore the formal gardens or the Teign Valley with its ancient gorge, teeming with wildlife. Recharge at the café with a traditional Devon cream tea or tuck into a slice of cake.Accessibility
The visitor centre which also houses the cafe and shop is very disabled friendly with wide doorways and automatic doors in and out of visitor reception. Their is an access map showing visitors which parts of the formal gardens are wheelchair accessible. There is a tramper available to hire at visitor reception as part of Countryside Mobility to access the garden and estate. (Booking is advisable on 01647 433306). The castle has many steps and the only step free access in the castle is to the Entrance Hall and Libary. There is an iPad which gives visitors a visual tour of the property.
