Venue Description
The Brough of Birsay is free to visit and open all year, but only accessible at low tide. Please note, the visitor centre is closed. Cross the causeway to a tidal island that was a place of local and perhaps regional importance, first for the Picts and later for Norse settlers. the remains of the Norse settlement include a ruined, Romanesque church that was a place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages.Accessibility
Approach to site The approach to the Brough of Birsay is initially down a set of 15 steps with a partial handrail and then about 100m across a tidal causeway. This consists of large boulders, stones, sand and seaweed and is difficult to cross. There is then a steep path up to the site. Visitor Centre The shop and exhibition are located on the island, over the tidal causeway. Once there, they have step-free access. Monument Once on the tidal island, the site is all on one level. The ground is uneven and covered in short cut grass. There are protruding archaeological remains.
