Venue Description
Explore this once mighty Iron Age settlement, with a small village arranged around a central, massive broch tower. Defended by two rock-cut ditches and a rampart, this was clearly a place of power. Look across Eynhallow Sound, once lined with brochs, to make out another well-preserved example at Midhowe, and perhaps glimpse minke and killer whales. 30 Mar to 30 Sept: The site is open daily (visitor centre accessible Sat & Sun only), 10am to 4.30pm. Last entry 4pm Closed for lunch 12 noon to 1pm 1 Oct to 29 Mar: ClosedAccessibility
Approach to site The broch is 180m along a gravel path and through a kissing gate (the gap is approx 0.5m wide). Visitor Centre The visitor centre has a single step into it. Monument The site has uneven ground and is mostly grass surfaced. There are numerous steps and level changes in the broch ruins. There is also a great deal of protruding archaeology for visitors to navigate. Some of the paths between buildings can be narrow.
