Venue Description

Brixton Recreation Centre is a leisure centre in the heart of Brixton. Facilities include multiple gyms, main pool and two teaching pools, eight court sports hall, four exercise studios, 5 aside indoor 3G football pitch, children’s play zone, climbing wall, boxing gym, six lane indoor bowls green, five squash courts, and a crèche and nursery.

Activities such as gym, fitness classes, swimming, and court bookings are available on a casual basis to both members and non-members. Children and adults are also able to book onto our Lessons and Courses which include Swimming, Holiday PlayScheme, Trampolining, Gymnastics, and Football. There are also specific sessions for those older than 55, disabled individuals, and females. We also work with a range of partners to deliver additional sports and activities such as fencing, taekwondo, and basketball (including wheelchair basketball).

Accessibility

The surrounding streets have dropped curbs and the immediate street is often closed to motor vehicles. There is a ramp, with multiple levelled breaks, to the main entrance. The main entrance has double, automatic doors and interior of the building has wide walkways, clear of obstacles. Whilst the centre is across multiple levels, there is a large lift.

Our accessible toilets and changing rooms are wide enough for wheelchairs, have handrails at the correct height, low level utilities, and emergency cords

Staff

All Better staff undergo Safeguarding training and where possible, disability equality and awareness training. Many of our Fitness Instructors have undertaken additional courses and modules to further their knowledge and understanding specific to disability. Across Lambeth, swim teachers undertook a CPD course in Autism Awareness and teachers can gain more experience coaching disabled persons at our inclusive supported swimming sessions.
