Venue Description
There is nowhere else quite like Bath Abbey. Magnificent stained glass windows, columns of honey-gold stone and some of the finest fan vaulting in the world, create an extraordinary experience of light and space. We are a living church, a place where people have prayed for centuries and continue to worship today.
Accessibility
The main entrance is level access, at 1150mm wide and follows through to the welcome desk, the main Abbey and the Abbey shop. The route and other doorways around the main Abbey are 1350mm wide or more and around the shop the route is 800mm wide or more. We have an accessible toilet on site and available at request, please just ask a member of staff. Access to the toilet is via a door with a width of 790mm. Some parts of the building have low lighting and the floor is currently uneven due to metal grilles and raised flagstones. We are currently undergoing our Footprint Project to allow us to repair and level the floor as well as creating new spaces and facilities, enriching worship and reducing our carbon footprint. We do offer Tower Tours which involve climbing 212 steps and are therefore not accessible for wheelchair users. To discuss any other requirements please contact our Tower Tours Team on 01225 422462 or towertours@bathabbey.org. We also offer Behind the Scenes Tours but due to the nature of the route these are not fully accessible. Please contact our Visitor Services Team on 01225 303315 or vists@bathabbey.org to discuss how we may accommodate your access needs for this tour. We can provide wheelchairs for free and if you would like to reserve one please contact our Verger Team on 01225 303328 or email vergers@bathabbey.org. You can also hire mobility equipment from Shop Mobility by calling 0122 5481744. We welcome assistant dogs. Ear defenders are available on request. Bath Abbey is also a member of Bath and North East Somerset Dementia Action Alliance and some staff and volunteers have attended Dementia Friends information sessions. An audio guide is also available from our website at: http://www.bathabbey.org/creatingvoices. We do have information in large print and have knowledgeable stewards to guide you through your visit if you wish.
