Overview

Bamburgh has done a lot of work on its website and in the castle itself to provide a good experience for disabled visitors. Between the read aloud on the website, the reduced price for disabled folk (free for one carer), the plentiful information on the website and the electric vehicles to carry you up to the main building, I managed to have a fantastic day. The staff were lovely.

Access

4.5

When we arrived, I parked in a disabled space, with my badge. Immediately the person in the ticket office asked if I would like them to call their electric vehicle down. This was available to anyone who needed it and took several folks up and down the steep entrance road. This meant I didn't have to struggle with my stick and saved me a lot of pain. The slope up to the main castle is very steep but well paved. I understand that a second vehicle is now available with space for a wheelchair but I did not personally encounter that, so check ahead. There were plenty of seats to sit, including in all the galleries I was able to visit. After a certain point anyone with walking aids etc could not progress but they warn you ahead of your visit about that. (A full and detailed accessibility statement for the physical site is available here https://docreader.reciteme.com/doc/view/id/661d88666f999 at time of writing). You are then able to watch a 20 mins video going through the spaces you've missed and giving you an overview of the history of the castle. Then you are let out back into the main area through another door. I have some mobility (I can walk slowly with a stick, a handful of low, stairs are possible for me). There are multiple entrances to places, a lot of it seemed wheelchair accessible but detailed info can be found on their website. There are two cafes, the tearoom is up a flight of stairs but there is ground floor access to the Tack room cafe.

Toilets

Only giving this a 4 because I can't comment that much on the loos but I didn't see a Changing Places toilet.

The staff were unbelievably supportive and helpful at every stage - willing to stop and talk to you and ask any questions. They gave me a really warm welcome and I felt utterly accepted.
