Venue Description

A Jacobean-style house with gardens and a watermill and a passion for tradition and impressing guests inspired one man to transform a run-down country house and desolate landscape into the estate as you see it today. Inside the house, you’ll find fine furnishings, books, paintings, silver and rare clocks that give a feeling of opulence. Outside, 114 acres offer vibrant colour, delicious scents and the simple pleasures of nature, throughout the year. Anglesey Abbey is full of adventures waiting to happen. Hoe Fen is great for children of all ages to have a wild adventure. Reach new heights with a trip to the top floor of the treehouse, or test your agility with our new scramble climber. There's plenty to do if you're looking to get stuck into nature: from den building to scavenger hunting, the possibilities are endless!

Accessibility

Assistance dogs are welcome. Visitor Reception • This is a large wooden building is right next to the car park. The entrance is along a paved pathway with bollards. The entrance has double, glass sliding automatic doors. • The interior surface in this area is mostly stone, with full length windows at either end to provide natural light. Fluorescent lighting is used to up and down light the space. • The reception desk is over 1000mm high but there is a lower area, 750mm in height, which the reception team can also use for admission and membership enquiries. There is an induction loop in place on the far end till. • A hand sanitising station is in place within the Visitor Centre. • There is no seating provided in the reception area. Gardens • The path from the visitor centre to the House is approximately 900 yards long and takes around 10 minutes to walk at a moderate pace. The route is relatively straight with a fine tar and chip surface. The route is lined with trees which can create a ‘dappled’ effect on the path if the sun is out. • The main circular route is winding but relatively flat and includes at various points: fine gravel, a narrower bark chipped pathway by the river, hard standing path and one point section of hard standing pathway that has a short sharp decline and incline near to the house. • All bark paths are accessible by wheelchair or mobility scooter in good weather. • Hoe Fen Woodland Play is our Wildlife and Discovery Area section containing the Treehouse and play equipment is currently closed to the public. The Wildlife Discovery section is open and contains mainly woodchipped paths. • Seating is provided at regular intervals through the formal gardens, via benches and deck chairs in the summer months. House • Please note that the House is closed during the months of January, February, August, and November in 2022. • Mobility scooters are not permitted within the house, a wheelchair is available to transfer into on request. • Due to the nature of the ground floor of the house, there are 3 separate entrance points, ensuring that all areas of the ground floor can be viewed. • The first entrance is via the domestic wing door, located in the rear courtyard, which provides access to the domestic wing. This entrance is flat and paved, however please note that this is the main exit route for other visitors and they will be required to give way on arrival. • An alternate entrance to the house is via the Front Porch located in the turning circle at the end of the main drive, which will provide access to the Living Room, Long gallery and Oak Room. There are 2 steps up at this entrance. A ramp is available upon request. In the event that a member of staff is not there to greet you at this entrance, a doorbell is available to use to request assistance. • Another alternate accessible entrance is located at the Tapestry Hall door to access the Dining Room and Tapestry Hall. There is a small step down at this entrance. A ramp is available upon request. • The stone spiral staircase leading to the 2nd floor from the ground floor does not have a hand-rail available. • There are no lifts or stairlifts available to the upper floors. • On the upper floors, there are several short steps between corridors. • Throughout the entire house, lighting levels are low throughout the year. • Room guides and the welcome team are available to assist with all accessrequests. • A large print photobook is available in the dining room containing images and information about the rooms and collections on the upper floors. • The narrowest doorway is 840mm wide • The path from the Visitor Reception to the House is approximately 900 yards long and takes around 10 minutes to walk at a moderate pace with benches placed along the route. • A shuttle service to and from the house is available on request. • All pushchairs, large bags and large baby carriers are unable to enter the house in order to protect the collection. Bookshop • The Second Hand Bookshop is open daily from 09:30 – 17:00 • The bookshop is located towards the rear of the house by the courtyard. • The entrance to the bookshop is through a 800mm wide doorway. • The floor surface is level and firm within the bookshop. Restaurant • Redwoods Restaurant is open for take away and table service, with seating available both inside the restaurant, and outside on a veranda and wood chipped picnic area. • All seating provided is available on a first come, first serve basis. • Entrance to the restaurant is via the Visitor Centre, and the exit via a woodchip path on a gentle decline, that has been overlaid with rubber matting, leading out into the pinetum. • Hand sanitising stations are in place at the entrance to the restaurant. • Please let a member of staff know if you have an allergy or intolerance. Retail • The shop and plant centre is open from 09:30am – 5:00pm daily. • Entrance and Exit is through a gateway in the Plant Centre and is accessible from the car park or via the exit route. • The Plant Centre has a pea gravel surface, and the interior shop has a solid floor with ample space for wheelchair and mobility scooter access. Mill • The Mill is currently closed (dated June 2022) however, when open: • Both the ground floor and upper floors are open. • The first floor is accessed by a flight of 16 very steep steps, with a further 11 very steep steps to the second floor. • There is a wooden handrail and a support rope for getting up and down the stairs. Please note that descending the stairs can be more challenging than going up due to the narrow nature of each step. • Ramped access is available into the Mill on request • The doorway is 840mm wide. • Up to 12 people can enter the mill at a time. • When the wheel is turning, the mill makes a loud rumbling sound, which is especially noisy within the mill itself and mild vibrations can be felt.

Toilets

Toilets: • There are toilets outside the Visitor Reception building, and inside the visitor building, including a right-hand transfer accessible WC with space to turn a wheelchair through 1500mm diameter circle in both sets of toilets. There is another single cubicle available in a toilet block near the house but this does have more limited access. • There are no adult changing facilities but baby changing facilities are available at all toilet locations. • All the toilets have hard surface floors and fluorescent lights.
