Overview
Flying America Airlines approached first desk of checking in I informed the woman I had booked assistance and asked for a wheelchair. Her reply she wasn't there to run around after me! The wheelchairs are in the assistance area! And also because my flight was in the afternoon there would be no assistance available! I was very shocked The queue behind me was very long and I didn't want to queue up again I d already been standing too long so I sat on my husband s suitcase to be pushed to the checking desk.meanwhile other passengers in wheelchairs were being taken to the front of the queue! They requested a wheelchair from there. We were taken to the assistance area to await boarding. When I was due to be collected there was an argument between colleagues as one was due to clock off and he didn't want to take me to the gate even though it was still 15 mins of his shift left and the gate wasn't far. I found the whole experience really stressful it made me feel like a second class person whose needs didn't matter. I will never use America Airlines again or Heathrow Airport assistance I was so stressed I nearly didn't go on the plane. Los Angeles Airport wasn't much better No chairs for 5 disabled passengers we waited half an hour to get one then a queue of about 30 disabled passengers waiting to get through customs with one officer. Many wanting the toilet and the customs officer saying NEXT WHEELCHAIR! NOT NEXT PASSENGER!! One lady had dementia and was not allowed a family member to go through with her it was only because I overhead a conversation in her family earlier when we were kept waiting for the wheelchair I knew this and told the guy pushing her as the customs officer was asking her questions she couldn't answer! Iam in a wheelchair due to a back injury nursing so I ve been on both sides of being in and pushing a wheelchair I think the whole service of both airports is disgusting. Just because passengers have a disability we still are human beings that want to be treated with dignity and respect other people need to be reminded that one day ANY day something could happen to them unexpected that will change their life completely and think about how they would feel being treated like this we still have feelings and would rather still be able bodied these people involved need more training and empathy DONT TAKE A JOB HELPING DISABLED PEOPLE IF YOU CANT PUT YOURSELVES IN THERE SHOES OR DONT REALLY GIVE A S..T ABOUT PEOPLE!!
