May Review Round Up

Welcome to the latest Euan’s Guide review roundup. We enjoy the chance to look through all the reviews that we have received and share some of the amazing reviews from April and May. 

Places to visit  

This month we have a lot of outdoor venues that our volunteer reviewers have been visiting. MrsGap has visited Plas Newydd House and Gardens. She gave the venue a four-star rating, though she mentions in the review that some areas of the gardens were harder to access than others. “Plenty to see from where we could get, including amazing views up and down the Menai Straits.” 

Lola reviewed Anglers Country Park in Wintersett. She gave it five stars. She had a nice walk around the reservoir with her carer on, flat and accessible paths, though she noted that these do get muddy in the wintertime. The review also includes some photographs of a Changing Places Toilet in the park.  

AngelaTopping enjoyed visiting RHS Bridgewater Garden near Manchester, giving her experience five stars. Angela particularly highlights the accessibility of the garden paths. “The paths are fairly smooth bonded gravel or paved. Lots of benches.” Angela praises RHS Bridgewater for considering the access requirements of disabled people. “All the staff were wonderful. I hadn't been able to book a wheelchair but they were still able to lend me one and helped me transfer. They also loan mobility scooters, but I suspect booking is essential.” 

WH recommends the Cumbernauld Theatre at LanternHouse as an accessible arts centre. The review mentions the high standard of accessibility that is available. “Wheelchair places in the auditorium are at the front of raked seating and provide an excellent view of the performance area/stage. The website has short video providing access information.” WH also mentions the staff, saying “Everyone was friendly and helpful.” 

Places to Eat  

Htwo0 highly recommends a visit to their local café in Barnard Castle The Whithem.  “There are two accessible entrances to the coffee both with automatic doors. There are indoor and outdoor seating options, and also accessible parking is available if needed.” Htwo0 includes pictures of the accessible toilet and accessible entrances for anyone who hasn't visited before. “It is my preferred café in Barney. I use it all the time as the gallery end is spacious and exhibits are changed regularly. They are dog friendly too.” 

EMacleod visited The Shetland Hotel for a meal with family and friends, noting that the hotel is outdated in some areas. However, the meal was excellent and EMacleod complements the staff. “Very friendly and welcoming staff, organising a suitable table for us.” 

The Pythhouse kitchen garden has received its first review on Euan’s Guide! WheelyP went for lunch with some friends and had a fantastic experience. “A celebratory lunch for four on a grey day but the location created an amazing ambience. Stunning food and exemplary service.” 

Places to stay  

Finberries reviewed The Midland Hotel in Manchester while on a work trip. Her review includes information about the layout of the bedroom, accessible bathroom and restaurant, with photos. 

New reviewer Euansguide2024 enjoyed a stay at Double Gate farm bed and breakfast in Wells, Somerset. In this review, the reviewer gives some helpful feedback to the venue owners to help improve the overall accessibility of the venue. 

Review of the Month - May  

This month the review of the month is RHS Bridgewater in Manchester by AngelaTopping. Angela talks about wandering around the paths and the walled gardens, which sound like a great place to visit this summer. From an accessibility point of view, we are always delighted to know there’s a Changing Places Toilet available and Angela tells is they have one in the Visitor Centre.
