Welcome to the March edition of our review roundup! This month we’ve had loads of fantastic reviews, so hopefully within our selection here there’ll be one that sparks your imagination. If you’ve been somewhere recently that you’d like to share, why not write a review? Just one review can give someone else the confidence to try somewhere new, so please do think of us when you’re out and about.

Places to visit  

Lots of our reviewers this month have been visiting museums, art, galleries and having family days out. MrsW sent a review about The Science discovery Centre and Museum in Widnes. She mentions that it is a good place to go for a family day out. “This is a nice few hours out.  Accessible throughout and good science displays. Good café space. Lunch room on the first floor if you take your own picnic or picnic benches outside.” 

Another great review comes from Ambassador TinaHodgkinson, this time for the Royal Air Force museum. “The RAF Museum is fascinating. It is amazing to see the planes close up, they are huge. Hanger 1 has something for everyone, there's a variety of planes to admire and lots of interactive screens.” Tina has given a really detailed overview of different areas of the museum and some brilliant pictures which illustrate the different exhibits. 

The Eling Mill experience in Southampton was a really interesting day out for MikeL. He said that it’s been really challenging to make the mill accessible due to its age. However, he also said the visitor’s centre and the cafe are very accessible. “There are good videos of how the mill works.” The organisers have created videos to show how the mill works for people who can’t access the mill itself. This sounds like a great day out for anyone who is interested in history. 

In London Kirsty Farnfield went to visit The Cutty Sark Tall Ship museum with a friend and wasn’t disappointed when she realised how accessible it was. “I thought I'd be limited to some kind of museum section around it, but no! There are lifts to all levels INSIDE the ship itself!” Kirsty also mentions that the staff were all very helpful and that there is a concession for anyone who is taking a carer.  

Places to stay 

Some of our reviewers have recommended places to stay across the country. Here’s a selection of their recommendations. 

Nmcmurdo highly recommends the Lindisfarne Hotel in Berwick Upon Tweed. The hotel is on Holy Island where a lot of accommodation is limited in terms of accessibility.“I used my powerchair for the duration of our stay. I had plenty of room to move about in our room/wet room. For breakfast we were given a table which I accessed easily with my wheelchair.” There are photographs which show the layout of the hotel room which is helpful for anyone who hasn’t visited before. We love a review with photos! 

Suzanne159 is a new reviewer, and wrote a really detailed review of the Netherurd Garden Hotel in West Linton near Edinburgh. Suzanne visited the hotel with a friend but she recommends it for a variety of disabled people, giving details of the space and equipment available in her room which made it more accessible. “We stayed in the interconnecting apartments. My room had lots of space and equipment including hoist as well as a large, well kitted out wet room.” Suzanne emphasises at the end of her review that the accommodation would be suitable for groups and families as well. There are some great photographs included to show the layout of the accommodation.  

There is another brilliant review from BamsMam who had a pleasant visit to Holiday Inn Express in Leigh Sports Village and highlights the helpfulness of the staff. “They made me feel good about myself and my needs. This made a real difference. I would 100% recommend the hotel to other people, particularly disabled persons. In fact, I already have recommended it.” 

Review of the Month 

Reviewer of the month from March goes to Tina Hodgkinson for her fantastic review of the Royal Air Force Museum in London. Tina included details about how to access the museum and lots of lovely photos which truly complement her review. We love all the reviews that come in however short or long they might be. That said, it’s particularly helpful for our readers if there is as much information as possible, and photographs and top tips for visiting really add value to someone who hasn’t been before.
