Beach Wheelchairs and Fun At The Beach

With the sunny weather making more of an appearance again for the end of Spring start of Summer we thought we’d take a look at some of the reviews that we have received on our website for beaches across the UK.

Holkham Beach in Norfolk is part of England’s largest National Reserve and was recently reviewed by K_L_S. Although they say that the beach would be difficult to access for wheelchair or mobility scooter users, they do mention that “the harbour walk more than made up for it.” Parking available however, limited blue badge spaces and an accessible toilet is available.

Whilst at the beach our reviewer K_L_S also visited Wells-next-the-Sea Beach Cafe. I think the title of their review definitely illustrates why they enjoy visiting, “best bacon rolls”! They also talked about step free access as you arrive and said, “inside there’s lots of room to manoeuvre and the tables are well spaced” plus “nothing was too much trouble” for staff members.

There is lots to do at Saltburn Beach in Saltburn-by-the-Sea even if you are not able to get on to the sand. It is described as “a lovely seaside town with nice independent shops” by our reviewer Rosy. They say the pier has level access right along and “the funicular railway is wheelchair friendly”.

More and more beach wheelchairs are becoming available around the UK, it’s a great service to allow everyone to feel the sea water on their toes or even to enjoy being on the sand with friends and family. West Sands Beach in St Andrews has beach wheelchairs that you can rent out free of charge when you book a timeslot in advance. Reviewer Scooterman says “famous West Sands at St Andrews is even better now as you can enjoy being on the beach in a purpose designed wheelchair”. There is lots of parking nearby, a disabled toilet opposite the hut where you hire the beach wheelchairs and an excellent café according to our reviewer.

Recently reviewer nmcmurdo visited Coldingham Bay in Eyemouth and felt COVID confident whilst there. They used the beach wheelchairs whilst there which are provided by Sea The Change. Within their review they provide information on how to hire out the beach wheelchairs and how to best access them. They say “that the path to the hut is sloped and can be a bit of a challenge to push a wheelchair up” therefore “the hoist and beach wheelchair can be brought to where you are parked” if that is easier.

Fleetwood Beach in Fleetwood also has beach wheelchairs available to hire and reviewer Bluefrog111 mentions they have “quite a few chairs which would suit a range of different needs and are available for adults and children.” Staff are described as being “incredibly friendly and helpful”.

At Balmedie Beach in Aberdeen there are beach wheelchairs available to hire free of charge, there is a hoist and changing places bed on site to help with easier transfers into a beach wheelchair. There is easy access to the beach from car park and wooded walkway and reviewer Lauraandben says it’s “lovely to get into the beach with friends and family.”

Woolacombe Beach in Woolacombe who hire out an All Terrain Mobility Scooter or a Beach Easy Wheelchair are listed on our website and waiting for their first review. You can hire them from Woolacombe Tourist Information Centre. We’d love to hear from anyone who visits here this summer!
