York Theatre Royal Review
Visit date:
Overview
York Theatre Royal is a theatre located in the heart of York city centre in St’ Leonards Place, in close proximity to the York Art Gallery and Museum Gardens. The exterior of the building is huge and upon entering the premises, there is a level entrance to the Foyer with automatic doors for easy wheelchair access, and at the Box Office area, there is a low counter, which is a great feature to allow effective communication with no barrier. Although not very noticeable, there are limited blue badge parking spaces located at the back of the theatre, but the distance from the car park to the building is appropriate. On the ground floor next to the café area, there is a big accessible toilet for wheelchair users and includes a red pull cord inside, for emergency purposes. On the right and left side of the toilets, there is a lift which can take people around different areas of the building including the Studio, Main House, Dress Circles and theatre bars.
Transport & Parking
Although not very noticeable, there are limited blue badge parking spaces located at the back of the theatre, but the distance from the car park to the building is appropriate
Access
Easy to read clear signs for the doors on access to the building and on the toilet doors.
Toilets
Very easy to find the toilet and in a great location. The wheelchair is able to fit through on observation and appears to be easy to navigate around. The toilet contains a red alarm pull cord for emergency purposes.
Staff
Extremely helpful on my visit. Detailed description on the new refurbishment features and the accessibility of the theatre for people with a disability. The staff also provided me with leaflets, containing information related to this and signposted me to the right staff who deals with the accessibility side of things.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
I would definitely recommend this place to people to visit as the refurbishment of the building is user-friendly and accessible for those with a disability. However to improve, I feel that the area next to the cafe could have more ramps to the other side of the cafe as there are alot of steps.
