Not great for full wheelchair users
Visit date:
This review is especially helpful for those who have or use the following: Walking Aid, Wheelchair, Mobility Scooter
Overview
The accessible room is not suitable for a full wheelchair user as the bed is only accessible from one side and by placing your wheelchair next to the bed, you either block the bathroom door or block the access to the steps to the top bunk. The double bed is also very narrow so it's a tight squeeze for two people. The bathroom, although big enough to accommodate a wheelchair, did not have a grab rail by the shower and the walls were quite shiny, so there was nothing to hold on to, to steady yourself getting from the shower area to the toilet. There were grab rails by the sink. The shower seat was free-standing but was very rickety. The car park had plenty of parking near to the accommodation but was laid to gravel over a rubber mat, which my wheelchair castors got stuck in. Once out of the car park area, there are then hard surfaces and ramps to the café and accommodation. The café was fully accessible with an accessible toilet although this was out of use during our stay. There was also level access to an outside seating area. Due to narrow doorways and small steps, the communal lounge area was not wheelchair accessible, so we couldn't use this. Although the YH is in a great location, it is close to a main road and railway station, so this may trouble you if you are affected by noise. On the whole, if you can mobilise without a wheelchair, this venue may suit you but I would not recommend it for full wheelchair users.
Transport & Parking
We drove and there was plenty of disabled parking. See my full review for comments on the car park surface. There is a train station called Southease very close to the YH although I'm not sure how accessible it is.
Access
There was a lift in the building where the cafe is, although I did not use this. See my full review for access issues.
Toilets
The toilet in my room was accessible from the left hand side (facing the toilet) and was slightly higher than the average toilet. There was also a grab rail. There was an accessible toilet in the cafe but it was out of order during my visit!
Staff
The staff were very friendly and helpful. Check in was in the cafe at the counter. They would be happy to move tables/chairs for you if needed.
