Overview
SAT NAV. for River Street car park SL4 1QT. Free disabled parking. Two episodes of Midsomer Murders where made here at Windsor, “The Magicians Nephew” and “Death in the slow lane”. Part of a hotel in Eton was used as Causton Magistrates Court, then Barnaby and Jones walk across the bridge (photo 3) after the hearing. The River Street free disabled parking is the better of all the car parks, quite easy to follow Sat NAV route through Windsor, and you will pass gardens with a high fountain before you turn right at lights, and as driving along the river which will be on your left, make sure you pull into the car park on your right before you get to the bend ahead. Three bays are available, but you are allowed to park in other spaces, and the car park looks over towards the castle (photo 1). TURN LEFT from car park and walk towards the River Thames (photo 2) and enjoy the views over the Thames, with the bridge ahead that links Eton with Windsor (photos 3 and 4). Turn around and head up now towards the castle (photo 5) having to get up a long sloping path to reach the main road for all attractions ( photo 6) and a few eating places (SEE OUR REVIEW OF KING AND CASTLE INN) You will pass the shopping mall area (photo 7) which did not appeal to us, and we pressed on to pass Windsor castle (photo 8) with the statue of Queen Victoria (9). At last, you reach the summit of the hill and a relief for your carer (photo 10) and now ahead of us we see the Macdonald Windsor hotel (photo 11) which stands directly below the flight path into Heathrow (photo 12) but why on earth someone built Windsor castle on the noisy flight path is a mystery ! An automatic revolving door allows access into the hotel itself (photo13) but I,m sorry to say it did not appeal to us, so we decided not to bother to check the hotel out, so no review. However, we did take a look at the cafe, with a nice level entry (14) but very disappointing inside, it’s just like any cafe (photo 15) but no appeal, a bit untidy looking, but at least clean (photo 16) Opposite stood the museum, and although only early morning a huge group was already waiting to enter the museum. (17) We were not tempted. There are a few shops selling usual tatty cheap goods (photo 18) why we buy them and then cast them aside is something we are all guilty of. As all main towns and cities, tour buses await for you (19) an old water bus caught our eye, good to see them still being used now, and finally, fighting to hold back the wheelchair, even with brakes on, we rolled down and back to car park (photo 20), and we must be honest with you, we could not wait to get out of Windsor quick enough. Very disappointing, it’s dirty in places, untidy, unloved, and sadly a typical run down centre that Britain seems to manage time and time again, no pride by councils or business people, we sometimes wonder what tourist think of this country. Unless you plan to visit Windsor castle, we would suggest you don’t Try to hard to go to Windsor, shame. To see if you fancy Windsor castle, read PixieS review, just type Windsor castle into search box. Also read AlanTheTraveller which is a good review as well.
Transport & Parking
The free disabled parking is close to the River Thames, but then to get to see Windsor it is an uphill and long push for your carer, but this is the nearest and better of the car parks. There are only 3 bays, but you can park in other spaces, but make sure your blue badge can be seen as regular checks are made.
Access
Getting you to the River is easy enough, just a few yards From car park, and on the level. Not a lot to see, but it’s a nice spot. It’s downhill from now on, or should we say UPHILL, it’s a long hard push for your carer.
