Overview

Windsor is served by two railway station. This review is for the Windsor and Eton Riverside Railway Station. This station is adjacent to the River Thames. It is a terminus station, with trains departing from here to London Waterloo, which takes about 50 minutes. This is the only station offering direct trains from Windsor to central London. It is a small and very accessible station, with helpful staff. The other station is Windsor and Eton Central, which is closer to Windsor Castle entrance. However, if you are travelling from London. You go from Paddington and change at Slough.

Transport & Parking

Windsor and Eton Riverside Railway Station is in the town centre. There are local buses close by.

Access

The station is small. I exited by Farm Yard which had a step free exit. There were a couple of steps without handrail at the Datchet Road exit. There is a small concourse with some bench seating. The station has two adjacent platforms, see photo. Wheelchair users will require a boarding ramp to get on/ off the trains. I found it just about do-able with my crutch. Please note the staff told me that the platforms slightly curve, so some carriages will have more of a gap than others, so it might be worth asking which ones if you require the less gap.

Toilets

There is an accessible toilet but I did not use it, so unable to comment.

Staff

Staff were very helpful and friendly. It is the guard on the train which will help you disembark, and they made themselves known to me on my outward journey. The ticket office was open and the member of staff was very helpful directing me to where the guard was for my return journey (having been at the station earlier in the day, I knew for my return that I did not need passenger assistance at Windsor and Eton station but would need the guard to know I had boarded and phone through to Waterloo to let them know I was travelling).

Anything else you wish to tell us?

The station is designed in a gothic style, with red Tudor style bricks and bath stone. It is a beautiful and very elegant station, see exterior photo, with Windsor Castle in the background. I used this station as I was going on a tour of Eton College. I would suggest if you are heading for Eton, to use this station as it is the closest to Eton High Street, as it is literally cross the bridge and its on the other side of the river. If you are going to the Castle the other railway station is closer and also up the hill. If you are planning to explore Windsor and Eton, you may want to travel out to Windsor and Eton Central and then walk downhill to the water front and Eton, and return by Windsor and Eton Riverside. I loved this station as it was small and easy to navigate. It's also a terminus station which I always find less stressful. It makes an easy and very pleasant day trip from central London. I would happily recommend or use again.
