Very poor wheelchair access, friendly staff
Visit date:
This review is especially helpful for those who have or use the following: Powerchair
Overview
This shop is a real obstacle-course for wheelchair users, and on the day I visited it was a shambles, though I was impressed by the friendliness of the staff.
Transport & Parking
There are no step-free stations nearby. The misleadingly-named Clapham Junction station, which is actually in Battersea, not Clapham, is over a mile and a half away. Several bus routes serve Clapham High St, and parking opportunities in the area are very limited.
Access
The entrance to the shop is a pair of very stiff and heavy doors. It was a real struggle to open one of them at the same time as operating my powerchair joystick and negotiating my way in. Not helpful - automatic electric doors are needed here. The shop is terribly cramped. The aisles would be just about wide enough if they weren't cluttered up with products for sale, extra display units, rolling stools (which are ancient and have lost their wheels) and numerous other objects which shouldn't be cluttering the shop up. In addition there were many dozens of packing cases cluttering up many areas of the shop, so that it was completely impossible, in a wheelchair at least, to get at greetings cards, reference books, and some other areas. If you like a big challenge and an obstacle course, you will love this shop - I didn't love it, I found it all frustrating and annoying and I won't be going back there again.
Toilets
This is not the sort of shop where I would expect to find a toilet.
Staff
The staff I encountered were alert, friendly and keen to help. For this: five stars. But they have forfeited half of those stars by their really very inconsiderate and thoughtless habit of cluttering up the aisles and making the shop so wheelchair-unfriendly.
