Overview

This is a review for Who Gets a Free Pass?, an event when the Wellcome turned into a comedy cabaret club. Stand-up comics discussing social justice and inequality. I wasn't sure what to expect but it was fabulous.

Transport & Parking

The Wellcome Collection is centrally located on Euston Road and almost opposite Euston Station. Also nearby are Euston Square and Warren Street Tube Stations. The nearest step free tube station is King's Cross. There are a number of buses that stop very close by. I travelled on public transport to get there and it was only a 2 minute walk from getting off the bus.

Access

The event has held on Saturday night when the main galleries were closed. The central push button door was the only one of the three doors open. Inside there is a short flight of stairs or a platform lift to the foyer. The comedy club was held in the cafe space next to the main reception. The cafe was open as a bar serving cold drinks, wine, beer and soft drink. This was self service. The cafe space had been re-arranged with a single stage, with ramp leading up, at one side. The rest of the space had the rows of sofas, freestanding chairs and individual tables laid out in a cabaret style. The space was comfortable and inviting. The performers spoke about social justice including ableism and the social model of disability. It felt an inclusive and fun space.

Toilets

Accessible and Changing Rooms toilets are clean, spacious, with grab rails and emergency cords.

Staff

Staff were exceptional yet again. Catherine Ayres emailed me prior to the event to check my support needs and to offer a range of support. When I arrived I was shown to my reserved table which was on the end of a row. This took all the stress out of going. I could just relax knowing their was an accessible seat for me. Thank you Wellcome and especially Catherine.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

Great, fun evening. Really nice inclusive, accessible place to enjoy my evening out. I think this might be the first time Wellcome has hosted a comedy club. I hope they will repeat the event. Many comedy clubs, bars, etc are not accessible, it was so refreshing to have this type of event in a very accessible building. Loved it.
